The government of Malta has unveiled a National Cyber Security Strategy. The strategy provides the legal context to defend the country’s computer networks infrastructure and its users from threats.

“This will serve as a framework to protect systems, networks and information on the internet, together with the people who make use of these services”, the government said in a statement.

The strategy has been developed by Malta’s Information Technology Agency (MITA). It was made public at a conference on 23 September by Emmanuel Mallia, Minister for Competitiveness, and Digital, Maritime and Services Economy.

The strategy covers:

  • fighting cyber crime;
  • regulatory aspects and national security;
  • private sector measures;
  • awareness and education; and
  • national and international cooperation.

‘Cyber crime is a major headache”, IT security specialist Keith Cilia Debono said in an interview published by MITA. According to him, Malta needs to have the necessary mechanisms and measures, including technological and legal tools. As most perpetrators operate from outside the country, he stressed that, “(fighting) cyber crime essentially calls for close cooperation with other countries.”
