A successful week of engagement and growth at SCEWC 2025
During the event, the LDT Toolbox took center stage as we presented to attendees how cities can address one of today’s most pressing challenges: balancing limited budgets while striving to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions. The presentation highlighted how the LDT Toolbox provides a practical and data-driven solution to this issue, helping urban decision-makers identify where refurbishment investments can deliver the greatest impact.
The models of LDT Toolbox analyse buildings and neighborhoods using key variables such as construction type, building age, and historical energy performance. At the heart of the system lies a genetic algorithm, capable of identifying optimal refurbishment strategies by evaluating thousands of possible combinations and recommending actions that maximize energy savings and emissions reduction.

Live DEMO: Tools in Action
The live DEMO offered an in-depth look at 5 different tools within the LDT Toolbox, demonstrating how city technicians, data analysts, and policymakers can leverage them to optimize urban energy management:
Identity Management
Demonstrated how user roles and access rights can be managed seamlessly across all tools, with easy integration into existing authentication systems.
Data Platform
Showed how different data sources - including time series, relational and non-relational databases, and digital twin data - can be connected to support AI model creation.
AI Notebook
Presented as a centralised development environment where models can be built, trained, and deployed using tools as Jupyter, VS Code, and RStudio.
Use Case & Scenarios
Highlighted how technicians can set objectives, define budgets and energy targets, and run experiments without developers’ support.
Play & Visualise
Demonstrated as a GIS-enabled interface that combines model results with real-time sensor data, allowing users to compare low-, medium-, and high-budget refurbishment scenarios.
The Toolbox identifies buildings with the highest potential impact, and visual maps displayed the results of various scenarios, enabling users to compare outcomes and prioritize interventions efficiently. This clear and interactive view of potential savings and impacts was one of the moments that captured particular interest during the session, and much more has to be shown. Stay tuned!
