The form schema is a **JSON schema** to create **digitally processable forms** for both the public sector and other organisations that need reliable data collection. It provides a technical basis for structured and verifiable data collection – for illustration via graphical user interfaces. Unlike the ‘data fields’ component of the Federal Information Management (FIM), the form schema does not take over any technical and legal representation of data fields.
The **scheme** is in **JSON format**, providing **documentation on the structure of Form JSON files**. It also supports the quick and easy creation of forms with an autocomplete functionality, without the need for specific software or complex infrastructure. Thus, the form schema is addressed to anyone developing, checking or providing digital forms.
The structure of the **form JSONs** – including levels of detail, field types and logical dependencies – is defined by the schema. This ensures consistency in data collection. Which fields are required, how they may be grouped and which validation rules apply are defined purely technically and not methodologically, technically or legally, as is the case in the FIM data fields building block. Automatic compliance checking allows the creation of valid, sustainable and maintainable **form files in the JSON standard**. In addition, the form scheme allows the integration of external sources of supply and the setting of trust levels for use cases relevant to data protection and security.
The presentation in frontend is not prescribed by the **JSON structure**, but is consistently considered (e.g. by means of visibility conditions, validation messages, etc.). The scheme thus explicitly supports the development of a frontend – and thus stands out from other solutions.
The form schema is freely usable, openly licensed and independent of individual technologies – ideal for future-proof and inclusive digital services. It promotes reuse and strengthens the digital sovereignty of organisations. The form schema is already successfully used on the service portals service-bw and Amt24 and the authority service portal (OZG-Hub).
