France's ministry of Agriculture has funded the development of an open source plug-in for Pentaho, an open source business intelligence solution. The plug-in enables users to upload and download a variety of office documents. The plug-in called FileUp, is published using the CeCCILL licence, announces Atolcd - the French ICT service provider that developed the code.

The code is now contributed to the Pentaho community, Atolcd writes on its website on 18 October.

The ministry decided to develop the plug-in last year. After comparing several open source BI solutions it selected Pentaho, based on the available features, integration in the existing IT systems at the ministry, price and other factors. "To fill a gap in the functional requirements that were identified during this selection phase, the ministry immediately wanted to contribute, launching the development of the FileUp plug-in."

The plug-in is easy to install and easy to use, promises Atolcd. Users can either upload files directly to the Pentaho server, or use a web service, intended for uploading large amounts of files. The default install adds support for common document files, but other types can be added as needed.
