Free and Open Source Tools for Geospatial Information Systems

The explosion of interest in spatial data in recent years has been coupled with an understanding from many businesses and organisations that using location and place as a key is a very successful way of managing their data assets. Parallel to this is a growing need, driven both by commercial self-interest and regulation, to share spatial data with other organisations. These and other drivers have been responsible for GIS moving from a niche product to the mainstream. Many existing users and newcomers are seeking to expand their spatial data capabilities and are adopting open source solutions as they offer a cost effective and versatile alternative to commercial software.

The School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences has developed a three day course for geospatial IT implementers, decision makers and users, providing an introduction to the open source GIS / geospatial software stack and its viability as both an alternative and complementary approach to commonplace proprietary GIS solutions. These courses are all accredited by the Association for Geographic Information and count towards continuing professional development.

More information about the courses is available here, and a timetable can be found here.

The course can be booked online.

Participation in the event is open to all but costs a fee:
• Two day course: Free and Open Source Tools for GIS: GBP510 (€580 approx.)
• One day course: Introduction to Spatial Databases: GBP260 (€290 approx.)
