Mario Zagar, professor of Electrical Engineering and Computing at the University of Zagreb was awarded Croatia's annual Open Informatics award last April. The annual award is given to Croatians contributing to the promotion, development and use of Open Standards and Open Source.

The award was given for the fourth year. It was handed out in Zagreb by Diana Simic, deputy State Secretary at the Office for e-Croatia, during the Open Systems Days and Croatian Linux Users Convention.

Professor Zagar is the founder of the Croatian Society for Open Systems and Internet (HrOpen). He is also the main lecturer at the 'Open Computing' course given at his institute. In this course he introduces the most popular Open Source programming languages and tools, talks about Open Standards and the general ideas underlying Open Source development and collaboration. The course is quite popular. Over the last ten years Zagar's cource attracted about 1600 students.

Zagar also successfully lobbied the faculty management to use the 'Creative Commons' Open Source licence as the preferred licence for all educational materials created by the teaching staff. This licence was adopted by the faculty in March.
