EACE is the acronym of an EU-funded research project and stands for the full title of the project "Expediting Adoption of e-Working Collaborative Environments".
The project is a Specific Support Action (SSA), funded by the European Commission (EC) under the Sicth Framework Programme (FP6) of which the primary goal is "Integrating and strengthening the European Research Area (ERA)". The project lies within the context of Activity "Policy support and anticipating scientific and technological needs", Call FP6-2004-SSP-4 entitled "Scientific support to policies", Priority "Underpinning the economic potential and cohesion of a larger and more integrated European Union?, Area 8.1.B.3.5 entitled "Information Society Issues (such as management and protection of digital assets, and inclusive access to the Information Society)", and Task 2 "New Collaborative Environments".
The essential drive for EACE stems from the growing need to investigate further the dynamics, potential and impacts of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) advances, which have been taking place for the past few years in the emerging research area of e-Working Collaborative Environments (e-CWEs) or Next Generation Collaborative Working Environments (NGCWEs) as these environments are often called by using the most visionary "Next Generation" in place of the commonly-used prefix "e-". EACE aims to meet this growing need in order to feed the policy making process and support the EC policy makers in designing "better" policies in the coming years in the area of e-CWEs or NGCWEs, preventing it from remaining only a vision but helping it become a reality.
In other words, EACE takes issue with the new possibilities offered by the new ICTs and their potential to bring innovation through new collaboration structures and patterns of peer-to-peer communication. To ensure that this potential is realised and capitalised, EACE principal goal is to identify and thoroughly understand the following:
* The dynamics of these new collaboration structures and patterns of peer-to-peer communication; and
* The socioeconomic benefits and implications of these dynamics for current and future EU-level policy developments, including policy initiatives in the context of i2010 which comprises the current EU-level policy framework in the Information Society domain.
