The Bavarian Junior High School Network (BRN)

The BRN provides information and eGovernment services on the Bavarian Realschulen (junior high schools) in order to simplify and foster communication between parents and school authorities and to reduce administrative work at school. In addition, it supports teacher, trainees and pupils concerning teaching material and provides for teaching persons facilities for job search, job transfer, online data surveys, etc. The BRN also contains an extensive database and a guestbook service.

Main results, benefits and impacts

Main indicators of impact and results are the outreach of service provision and the effects achieved for agencies and other users: Outreach: Regional, Comment: All Realschulen in Bavaria. It has started with 45,734 requests in September 2000 on the BRN pages and in February 2004 there were already over 5 million requests. There are more than 320 junior high schools in Bavaria with 320.000 pupils and their parents and about 10.000 teachers. There is an average of about 400.000 page calls a month and 5 million serverhits a month. Special eGovernment applications, e.g. the support of the open transfer procedure are used by more than 60% of the concerned users. Lessons learnt

The learning points are indicated by the innovative issues of the case: The objectives are simplification of information and communication between schools an the board of control and to force communication between schools and to support teachers and trainees concerning teaching material, job seach, job transfer, etc. and to provides facilities for data surveys. Transferability limits of the case: The equipment which the members of the team use for their work consists of computers and software which are mostly private or provided by their school and only open standards like php4 and MySQL are used.
