European Research Information Ontology (EURIO)
The European Research Information Ontology (EURIO) is a semantic model that represents structured data on research projects funded under the European Union’s Framework Programmes for Research and Innovation. It provides the conceptual foundation for the EURIO Knowledge Graph, which integrates information from the Community Research and Development Information Service (CORDIS) and other European research data sources.
EURIO offers a standardized and interoperable framework to describe key aspects of EU-funded research, including projects, programmes, funding schemes, grants, organizations, and people involved in research activities. By ensuring a common data structure, it facilitates the linking and reuse of research information across platforms and institutions.
The ontology is aligned with widely adopted standards and ontologies, such as:
- FRAPO (Funding, Research Administration and Projects Ontology), for modelling funding schemes and grants;
- DINGO (Data Integration and Naming for Global Open Science), for describing projects and research activities;
- schema.org, for general web interoperability;
- and the W3C Organization Ontology, for describing institutions and organizations.
Through these alignments, EURIO ensures compatibility with other Linked Open Data vocabularies and supports integration within the broader European research information ecosystem.
EURIO contributes to the European Union’s Open Science and Digital Europe policies by promoting transparency, interoperability, and accessibility of publicly funded research data. It enables researchers, policymakers, data scientists, and public administrations to explore, analyse, and reuse data on EU-funded projects in a consistent and machine-readable way.
Main features of EURIO include:
- Ontology-based representation of EU-funded research projects and related entities;
- Interoperability through alignment with established ontologies and web standards;
- Support for Linked Open Data publication and integration in the EURIO Knowledge Graph;
- Regular maintenance and publication by CORDIS, ensuring up-to-date and reliable access to EU research data.
EURIO is developed and maintained by CORDIS and is available for reuse on the EU Vocabularies website. The ontology and its documentation are published openly and regularly updated to reflect evolving data models and research policies.
