Linking synonyms to the glossary terms improves the search results for data consumers (both humans and machines). This dataset aims to identify synonyms for the concepts/terms in the ELISE Glossary.
In the context of the ELISE Action synonyms, hypernym and hyponym, are understood as:
- Synonyms: Two words (or wordings) that can be interchanged in a context are synonymous relative to that concept. In practice, the term synonyms were used a little bit broader, i.e. it also covers terms that are used interchangeably within the community without being so. For example, location data and location information are not the same but are used interchangeably by most people in the ELISE and (partially also) in the geospatial community. Also, in the manual processing of some external resources (see further), terms in practice rather than hypernyms or hyponyms were retained.
- Hypernym: a word that is more generic than a given word: "data interoperability process" is more generic as a term than the term "data transformation".
- Hyponym: a word that is more specific than a given word. For example, "public service process" is more specific than the term "business process".
Identifying synonyms for the ELISE glossary terms was a three-step procedure:
- The format of the synonyms dataset structure was proposed, discussed, and decided.
- The selected third parties' potential glossaries, vocabularies, and ontologies. To this end, contacts were made with the technical people involved in managing these external resources to obtain background and/or technical information, such as the origin of the definitions provided or technical details on the provided machine-readable services.
- Define if automation is possible or whether the screening must be done manually. The next sections explain the three steps in more detail.
The resulting RDF dataset contains 116 synonyms: 39 were retrieved manually, and the remainder was found automatically. The dataset also contains 154 close matches, linking terms in the ELISE Glossary to other glossaries and vocabularies.
