The AES standard encryption technology to protect the confidentiality of stored and transmitted data and is the replacement for the aging DES standard. AES is used both in the Netherlands and around the world a lot and, in very many different ways used. Examples of use are: 1. In programs such as WinRAR, WinZip, PowerArchiver, etc. is offered as AES encryption. 2. AES is used for security (WPA2) wireless networks (WiFi), see IEEE 802.11i. 3. AES is used to encrypt data for transmission over the Internet, https traffic etc. 4. Hardware for networks is frequently made use of AES. AES was developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a federal agency within the U.S. Department of Commerce, and has also recorded by ISO.
