The European Commission has launched the EU Open Source Solutions Catalogue (EU OSS Catalogue) today, 31 March, making it publicly accessible through the Interoperable Europe Portal.

This new resource was developed under the FOSSEPS (Free and Open Source Software for European Public Services) Preparatory Action. Its primary objective is to strengthen collaboration across the European Union by providing a central platform for enhancing visibility, sharing, and reuse of open source software solutions beneficial to public sector administrations in EU Member States.

The EU OSS Catalogue currently hosts over 640 solutions, encompassing both complete solutions and individual building blocks to be used while building your own solution. Hundreds of additional repositories are planned to be included by the end of 2025. Designed primarily for public administrations across the EU, the catalogue provides access to reusable solutions across more than 30 key areas relevant to public sector needs.

Built on a federated architecture leveraging public APIs, the EU OSS Catalogue consolidates solutions from national and local OSS catalogues across EU Member States into a unified central repository.

Currently, the EU OSS catalogue contains software from the following EU National & Local Catalogues (more catalogues scheduled to be integrated throughout the year):

This structure enables public administrations to efficiently search for and identify software solutions that precisely match their needs. The available features include:

  • Free text search (searches in the solution title, description, etc)

  • The source catalogue (who is providing the solution, sometimes a catalogue from the same country might have more specific solutions for you)

  • The category (the business domain/topic for which the solution was created)

  • The intended audience

  • The maturity level of the software (you might search for solution that can be used immediately, or look for future solution that are a work in progress but fit your future needs)

The catalogue's features will continually evolve to better support the EU public sector and further encourage the adoption and reuse of open source solutions.
