The abundance, length, depth and complexity of legal texts is constantly growing and makes law-making, legal analysis and enforcement ever more complex. However, new technologies hold significant potential to assist and support policymakers and analysts in these tasks.
On 26 March 2021, we had the chance to welcome two speakers and discuss their cutting edge AI-powered solutions for screening legislations:
- Mr Bertrand de Longueville, European Commission, Joint Research Centre - SeTA, a Semantic Text Analysis tool
- Mr Yannis Charalabidis, Professor of Digital Governance, University of the Aegean - ManyLaws, EU-wide Enhanced Access to Big Open Legal Data

Key takeaways
In particular, Bertrand, Yannis and the participants shared their impressions on the two tools and what is coming up in the future. Discussions about potential extensions of the tools to other languages, countries, functions and on their availabilities in different formats were raised. Both tools have made their proofs, but they are still being developed and piloted. It was clear from participants' engagement that these tools would be useful in their work and that there would be appetite in digital-ready policymaking.
