The Joint Research Centre (JRC) has released its latest technical report, Weak signals in Science and Technologies – 2024, which identifies 221 emerging technologies with the potential to significantly impact Europe’s future competitiveness.
Through a quantitative methodology developed in 2019, the report detects early indicators of technological developments and categorises them into twelve thematic clusters. These include artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, finance and healthcare. This approach not only facilitates the formulation of concrete policy recommendations to address potential social and economic consequences but also provides valuable insights into the concrete application of these technologies.

Biotechnology: the research on the production of biofuels from microalgae.
The report emphasises that while Europe excels in scientific publications, particularly in areas such as digital twins, AI and biotechnologies, it falls behind the United States and China in patenting these innovations. This competitive disadvantage suggests the need to enhance Europe’s Research & Development (R&D) programs, increase funding and foster collaboration between research institutions and industries.
By actively supporting the development of these emerging technologies, the European Union can become a global technological leader in innovation and sustainable development, ultimately improving the quality of life of its citizens.
