A microservice to speed up the drawing of graphs based on government data, and an Arduino-based solution broadening the available use cases of Italy’s eID cards, are now among the winners of a country-wide Italian eGovernment hackathon. A total of six projects received the first ‘Wise Turtle’ awards from the organisers of the Hack.Developers event, which took place in early October.

The other winners include a plugin to ease the integration of web apps and chatbots with Italy’s new public system for digital identity management (SPID), and a microservice linking the ‘smart city’ data platform of the city of Florence to DAF, DAF a new national data platform.

Diego Piacentini, Italy’s Special Commissioner for the Implementation of the Digital Agenda, handed out the awards at a ceremony on 21 November.

Italy’s governmental Digital Transformation Team organised the original hackathon on 7 and 8 October, in 25 cities across the country. The goal was to get software developers, IT experts and students to help make public-sector software more accessible and easier to use. The hackathon focused on the contribution of open source to some of Italy’s key digital services.

A first set of awards, for projects that delivered working code within the two-day hackathon, had been announced earlier. On 8 November, Developers Italia announced the ‘Wise Turtle’ award, for projects that continued to work on more complex software solutions after the end of the event.
