The Administration of the Tagus Valley Hydrographical Region, Portugal, published on its website a case study about the application of an open source Geographic Information System (GIS) software for the management of water resources in the country.

The Administration of the Tagus Valley Hydrographical Region explains how successful the implementation of a GIS infrastructure based on Open Source programmes (such as PostgreSQL, PostGIS, GRASS and QGIS) has been for data management, assessment processes and requests for waste water use licenses (Títulos de Utilização de Resíduos Hídricos - TURH, in Portuguese).

The case study presented shows that the use of Open Source GIS software for essential tasks has already become a reality and that the chosen set of programmes successfully met the determined objectives.
