KMKey stands for Knowledge Management Key. It is an open source, web-based software available on Joinup. KMKey aims to provide public administrations with solutions for sharing knowledge in a collaborative environment within three components: 'Project' for planning and managing a project; 'HelpDesk' for project support; and 'Quality' for managing quality. The KMKey's knowledge management includes features such as resource management of material and economic resources as well as integrated information management of documents, diaries, agendas, indexed search and e-mail integration, to name just a few features.
The software was initially developed in 1999. It was aimed at collecting information about a building and sharing of knowledge between various stakeholders. The open source version of KMKey was first released in 2005. The software is distributed under the GPL v2 license. The developers decided for this licence because KMKey is based on another open source software, Nuxeo CPS, which is made available under the same licence.
The software is used by city councils across Spain, such as Guipuzkoa, Terrassa and Granollers, as well as some universities in South America. The developers have also started a collaboration with a public state company in Venezuela.
The KMKey team is currently working on next version, codenamed 'Belvis'. The name of the release commemorates one of the developers who died recently. The release will include more customisations and better usability in order to meet specific needs of public administrations.
