Luxembourg launches open data…

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg officially launched its national open data portal data.public.lu on April 8th. This portal, supported by Digital Luxembourg, the government agency in charge of digital affairs in the country, was presented during the Game of Code hackathon.

Currently in preview mode, data.public.lu lists datasets related to land registry, public transportation, bicycle sharing services, geography and topology, budget and network traffic among other things. Fewer than 60 datasets are referenced in the portal and these were also used in a hackaton called “Open Data Challenge: Smart Mobility”, to promote the reuse and the development of applications based on these data. “A portal like ours lives thanks to its content”, the website notes.

The portal lists fifteen applications that reuse open data. Three of these came from the hackaton, including Parklux and Freeride. The first is an app which maps the parking slots in the Luxembourg capital; the second allows you to plan a trip of less than 30 minutes using Veloh, the bicycle sharing service.

Collaboration with France

Data.public.lu is also the result of a collaboration started in 2015, with Etalab, the French agency in charge of open data strategy in France. The portal in Luxembourg runs Udata, the code base used for data.gouv.fr, the French national open data portal.

Etalab’s teams have helped Luxembourg to get into the code, Etalab said on its blog. Luxembourg contributes to Udata by improving the documentation and the code of the project. “Now, detailed explanations are provided for those who wish to test Udata, customise it to their own country or to make improvements”, Etalab added. The subscription path was also re-developed by Luxembourg and added to the Udata code base.
