The developers of Project-open, a project and portfolio management system hosted on Joinup, have announced that they are working on next release of their software due in autumn 2012. According to the information received on the next version 4.1, one of the most important and interesting new features will be an application (app) store. The overall concept is based on the growing trend of app stores in operating systems, mobile devices and online services.

The developers indicate that they “plan to setup an online store to allow users to download and install add-on packages provided by the [Project-open] core team and other entities.” Implementing store functionalities will also solve at least some of the licensing problems related to external modules. The app store “will allow us to integrate packages into [Project-open] that are released under incompatible licenses”, such as GPL v3.0.

In addition to the app store, the developers plan to introduce in the next version more Ajax features and the Funambol integration. The latter would allow syncing both tasks and contacts between several common proprietary email and smart phone applications or any other Personal Information Manager applications with SyncML capabilities.
