Roberto Moreno Díaz

Through his presentation, Mr. Roberto Moreno-Díaz jr will explain how, in 2011, the government of the Canary Islands implemented an aggressive plan for open source migration.

The DGTNT (General Direction for Telecommunications and New Techologies) carried out the open source migration plan, in order to reorganize the whole IT policies and IT departments at the Canary Islands Government and to control the costs of internal telecommunications. In this way, they boosted eAdministration and related public services and the infrastructure of our emergencies telecommunications network including submarine fiber connections between islands.

Roberto Moreno Díaz, currently professor at the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, has been General Director for Telecommunications and New Technologies of the Canary Islands regional Government  in the period 2011 - 2015. Holding a degree in Physics and a PhD in Computer Science, he has been Visiting Scholar at SUNY Buffalo (USA) and Vienna (Austria) universities, research Associate at the Canary Islands Institute of Technology, vice-director of the International Centre for Computer Science Research and Secretary of the University Institute for Cybernetics both at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. He has supervised the research in six PhD Thesis in the fields of Computer Science and Technological Applications in Tourism and authored or co-authored over 50 publications published in international journals. Between 2007 and 2011 he has been Island Councilor for Tourism, Foreign Trade and Technological Innovation of the Gran Canaria island Government.
