Software Freedom Day 2011

Software Freedom Day (SFD) is an annual worldwide event which aims to educate the public about the benefits of using high quality Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) in education, in government, at home and in business. Hundreds of teams from all around the world will be running local events to help their communities understand Software Freedom.

The objectives of the event are:

  • To celebrate software freedom and the people behind it
  • To foster a general understanding of software freedom, and encourage adoption of free software and open standards
  • To create more equal access to opportunities through the use of participatory technologies
  • To promote constructive dialogue on responsibilities and rights in the information society
  • To be inclusive of organisations and individuals that share the vision of FOSS
  • To be pragmatic, transparent, and responsible as an organisation

Each event is left to local volunteer teams around the world to organise. Events on the day vary from team to team and usually include informational seminars, software demonstrations and training, and product giveaways.
