GovTech Connect: Instigating innovation in the public sector

Published on: 22/11/2024 Document

The GovTech Connect boot camps have been driving innovation across Europe by supporting technology startups in building solutions that can help tackle key European public sector challenges. Throughout 2023 and 2024, GovTech Connect delivered four boot camps that attracted 100+ applicants, and engaged over 60 GovTech experts and leaders.
The boot camps have focused on key European policy priorities and supported some of the most promising innovators in the following areas:

  • Achieving net-zero: Targeting startups from the Nordic-Baltic region, the first boot camp showcased nine innovative solutions aimed at achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. These included tools to drive the green transformation of public services, such as Measure & Change's digital tool to monitor and reduce climate impact, offering detailed reporting for governments and an interactive dashboard for citizens, and Klimato's carbon accounting software, helping businesses and governments address the food industry's 34% share of global emissions.
  • Digitising public services: Sixteen Southern European startups focused on three key areas: Inclusive and Accessible Services, making public services more equitable for all; Transparent and Open Government, using data and technology to enhance accountability; and Community Engagement and Collaboration, fostering stronger connections between governments and communities. Notable solutions included Builti's software for monitoring infrastructure safety and SignAvatar's AI-powered tool for translating speech into sign language, with a focus on TransportSign, which converts public transport announcements for deaf and hard-of-hearing users.
  • Smart Cities: Boot Camp 3 featured sixteen Western European startups addressing challenges in energy, mobility, wellbeing, engagement, water, security, and infrastructure, with solutions like Breeze Technologies, a German startup focused on air quality sensors and data analytics to help cities monitor and improve pollution. Boot Camp 4 showcased thirteen Central and Eastern European startups tackling similar challenges, including Tranzy.ai, a real-time passenger information platform that enhances public transit management with seamless updates and open data access.

"The GovTech Connect Boot Camps have marked a significant step forward in the creation of a connected European GovTech market. Platforms like GovTech Connect are essential to drive greater international collaboration and investment into the sector, ultimately enabling the most successful innovations to reach more and more citizens and public servants." - Chiara Carlini, Programme Director, GovTech Connect

The impact of the GovTech Connect programme is perhaps best demonstrated through the experiences of the participating startups. By equipping these innovators with the tools, insights, and networks needed to navigate the complexities of the public sector, the initiative has empowered them to better adapt their solutions for government markets. Here’s what some of the startups had to share about their journey:
