Data Innovation Toolkit: MVP showcase and user testing - Workshop Results
On 4th September 2024, the Digital Innovation Team hosted a second collaborative workshop (see the results of the first workshop here) aimed at refining our Data Innovation Toolkit Minimum Viable Product (MVP) and the Data Innovation Repository. This workshop served as a crucial platform for gathering feedback from participants to enhance the tools designed to assist in starting, managing, and completing data initiatives within the public sector. There were 19 participants in total, most of whom had already taken part in the first workshop, including members of the European Commission and external experts.
Purpose of the Workshop
-
Gather Feedback on the work-in-progress MVP: Participants were invited to provide comments and feedback on the MVP. The goal was to assess whether the MVP effectively centralises information to support data initiatives and if the materials presented meet user needs.
-
Testing the Data Innovation Repository: The workshop also focused on the current and final version of the Data Innovation Repository. Feedback was sought on its usability, the suitability of the materials, and the effectiveness of its features.
Thus, the primary goal was to collect valuable insights from project stakeholders to improve both the Data Innovation Toolkit MVP and the Data Innovation Repository.
Workshop structure
-
Topics covered: The workshop delved into the structure of the toolkit, outlining how it was divided into various stages (project planning and initiation, research, development, solution testing and solution scalability). Each stage was then explored in detail, providing participants with the opportunity to evaluate one tool per stage. Finally, the Data Innovation Repository was introduced, and participants had the chance to test it as well.
-
Interactive sessions: It featured open discussions to foster collaborative engagement and interactive tools like Miro Board were utilised to collect real-time feedback from participants.

Highlights and key results
During the workshop the first version of the Data Innovation Toolkit MVP was presented. Participants had the opportunity to discuss both the overall structure of the MVP and specific tools within it. Using a Miro Board facilitated an interactive way to collect participant feedback.
We gathered information on:
-
The overall structure: suggestions on additional steps, removal or reordering of existing steps, and applicability to various projects.
-
The readability and visual improvements: feedback on text layout, visual appeal, and ease of understanding.
Based on the comments received, several key areas for improvement were identified:
-
Text layout enhancement: there is a need to improve the textual layout, making it more concise where possible to enhance readability.
-
Intuitiveness of the MVP: enhancing the connection between different tools within the MVP to make it more user-friendly.
-
Additional resources: participants expressed interest in adding new resources to better meet stakeholder needs. This includes reordering or removing materials that may not currently fit within the project's scope.
-
Design feedback: various suggestions were made regarding the design of the MVP, emphasising the importance of visual appeal in user engagement.
Next Steps
We are committed to incorporating the valuable feedback and strategies discussed during the workshop. Continued collaboration with stakeholders will be sought to ensure the tools meet user needs effectively, and we aim to delve deeper into specific areas highlighted by participants to enhance the solutions provided by the Data Innovation Toolkit and Repository. We thank to all participants for their contributions and stay tune.
