This classification provides a European structure for the Eurostat standard code list for sex / gender. 5 codes have been defined: Total, Females, Males, Not applicable and Unknown.

Eurostat developed (and will maintain if needed) the SCL-Sex.
4. Intended audience
SCL-Sex has been developed in order to provide to all persons and organisations that may need to have a classification of sex / gender such a tool. The main target was the statistical institutes or organisations that may need to create statistics on the topic. European Union Member States are as well targeted because they provide statistics to Eurostat with this classification.
5. Known implementations
The SCL-Sex is primarily used by all European Union Member States in order to give standard statistics to Eurostat.
