How discoverability of geospatial data can be improved?
Users of geospatial data who want to find the geospatial datasets they need, or who are looking for specific geospatial objects might have a difficult time to find their way in the rich data infrastructures offered. This is not different for INSPIRE. They can go to the INSPIRE geoportal and browse it, or use a keyword, or select on a combination of criteria. They might find the right dataset if one is familiar with the INSPIRE data themes. However, users active in other domains or users who want to use cross domain datasets, have difficulties finding the right data objects. The INSPIRE object catalogue can help in this but the challenge remains because the nomenclature used is linked to the INSPIRE themes. A solution to improve searches might be to embed synonyms, hypernyms and hyponyms that are matching or that are closely related to the terms used in INSPIRE. ELISE has explored several ways to identify such synonyms, hypernyms and hyponyms and tested several approaches. This webinar presents the results of the work performed.

Danny Vandenbroucke and Marc Olijslagers from KU Leuven and both geospatial experts, will zoom in on the following topics:
- Challenges for INSPIRE users to find the right geospatial objects.
- What are synonyms, hypernyms and hyponyms, and how can they help to improve search mechanisms?
- Several methods and sources to identify synonyms for INSPIRE: from linking to other vocabularies, ontologies, and thesauri, up to the use of transformation schema.
- Experiments with the different approaches: what are the results?
- Possible next steps and future work.

This webinar is a part of a series of “Webinars and events” performed by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre under the ELISE ISA² Action. The aim of these webinars is to quickly engage with new topics of relevance to the location interoperability, the digital transformation of government and socio-technical developments in this arena and to share the results and outcomes of ELISE action.
The workshop will take place on the 03/12/2020 at 14h00 CET (UTC+1).
