CrossRef and DataCite are two global non-profit organisations that have agreed to collaborate in order to enhance the interoperability of their respective systems. CrossRef is known as an association of worldwide scholarly publishers, where DataCite is dedicated to enable people to find, share, use, and cite data.

This new initiative will allow publishers, data centres, libraries, and third parties to more easily integrate with the scholarly DOI ecosystem. Furthermore, it will provide comprehensive support for interlinking articles and data, and open APIs and open source tools can be developed to surface citations and other relationships between publications and data sets.

Another possibility will be to integrate existing scholarly communications, including ORCID and CrossRef's FundRef, into both organisations’ services. Finally, the collaboration will also allow for the development of additional systems, workflows, and best practices for using DOIs.
