In a news item on the Digital Agenda website, the need for semantic interoperability of datasets and the promotion of the DCAT Application Profile (DCAT-AP) for datasets in Europe are mentioned as key aspects in the EU's on-going implementation of the G8 Open Data Charter.

In June 2013, the EU endorsed the G8 Open Data Charter and committed to implementing a number of open data activities in the G8 members’ Collective Action Plan. The Collective Action Plan required each member to publish by October 2013 details of how they would implement the Open Data Charter according to their individual national frameworks. According to a news item on the Digital Agenda website, the EU's existing policy is compliant with the G8 Open Data Charter. The news item outlines a number of details of the EU's on-going implementation of the G8 Open Data Charter. These include the EU's support and promotion of the use of the DCAT Application Profile (DCAT-AP) for data portals in Europe as a description metadata standard for publishing and exchanging descriptions of datasets between data portals in Europe. The DCAT-AP is used in the Open Data Support project, which fosters the exchange of dataset descriptions between data portals, with the purpose of realising the pan-European open data portal including an integrated multilingual search functionality.
