About the conference

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) is an institutional partner of the Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G) conference 2016 taking place from August 24 to 26 in Bonn, Germany (http://2016.foss4g.org/). The OGC maintains an active Memorandum of Understanding with the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) which is the host of the annual FOSS4G conference.

One of the core activities of the OGC is the development and maintenance of geospatial standards. Additionally to officially publish the standards documents the OGC maintains a list of implementing and compliant software plus reference implementations, especially for the interface standards. These reference implementations are required to be available in source code so that interested parties can profit from looking at working code. Software published under an Open Source license is a natural fit for this requirement. Open Source geospatial technology also has a long tradition of implementing standards to foster interoperability. This tradition goes right back to the roots and origin of the OGC which formed as a response to the increasing incompatibility of non-open geospatial software technology.
