Introduction

This Summit will bring together major players from the Standardization and in the Open Source industries, such as ETSI, OASIS, W3C, ECMA, Linux Foundation, ONF, OFE Open Forum Europe, OGF Open Grid Foundation, etc., to present their experiences and experiments, to discuss their relative roles and to learn how we can make the synergies work.

Who should attend

This ETSI Summit is of particular interest to decision-makers in technology strategy or management in standardization, leaders in Open Source projects, Chief Technical Officers, professionals involved in strategic planning or product strategy, research and standards management.

The event is also of particular interest to public authorities, local, regional and national governments, European institutions and the European Commission, as well as the ICT industry at large, including equipment manufacturers, service providers and system integrators.

Purpose and scope

Standardization appears to be at crossroads: are standards and standards bodies such as ETSI relevant in today’s world of ubiquitous and ever increasing Open Source products and projects?

ETSI believes the answer is a firm yes, even more so when the two work together. We see Standardization and Open Source as complementary and not just competing, as it is generally perceived.

Open Source is seen as bringing many advantages such as innovation, fast development and the involvement of a committed and innovative global community. On the other hand, Standards bring long-term stability, wide consensus and a cohesive view of large and complex systems, together with ensuring interoperability, confidence in products and services and offering economies of scale.

Format

The Summit will have a free-flowing format to encourage debate and an exchange of views.
Presentations in the morning from leaders in the Open Source and Standards communities will focus on "Standardization and Open Source: A Changing Landscape". Views will be presented on the role of standardization in the context of Open Source and vice versa.
The afternoon will focus on practical experience and look at how the two communities can move forward "Standards and Open Source: Better Together?” It will feature presentations form Open Source Projects and key standardization activities such as NFV and M2M.
During the day, there will be two special presentations, one will provide an overview of licencing and IPR issues, the other will show practical steps ETSI is taking towards the introduction of Open Source in its Standards Making Process.
There will be two panel sessions comprising the speakers and invited panellists.
