About the event

On January, 29th, MEP Jacek Protasewicz will host an event at the European Parliament in Brussels, supported by Pawel Swieboda, President of demosEUROPA, Maciej Bukowki, President of the Warsaw Institute for Economic studies and Jan Muehlfeit, Microsoft Chairman of Europe to LAUNCH the results of an important research on the Economic benefits of Big & Open Data: Big Data and Open data in Europe: a growth engine or a missed opportunity?

The research was lead by the Warsaw Institute of Economic Studies, and commissioned by demosEuropa.

The report will give insights on the potential growth increase in GDP across EU28 by 2020 that Big Data can provide. In addition, the report will differentiate the opportunities between Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western Europe, also highlighting the industry impact across EU 28 as well as per country and per sectors. Finally, it will identify the policy recommendations that will enable the region to lower the current obstacles to Big Data.

• To avoid losing the global race for data-driven value Europe must, first and foremost, recognize the nature of the big and open data revolution.
• Big and open data offers greater opportunities for entrepreneurs and SMEs by providing greater access to funding, opening European and global markets and reducing costs and improving business process efficiency.
• Big and open data will bring immediate benefits to advanced markets in Europe, while it has strong long-term potential in less mature markets – speeding up the growth of the service sector and driving the creation of knowledge economies.
• Big and open data is the latest stage of the ICT revolution in Europe, building on significant developments in computing power and data storage capacity.
