Solid hands-on workshop - 6 October
We are pleased to announce that the SEMIC Team of the ISA2 programme, in collaboration with Ghent University, is organising a unique, hands-on workshop on the Solid ecosystem, taking place on the 6th of October 2020.
Solid is a web-based ecosystem that separates data from their applications by providing citizens with their personal data pod, in which they can store data independently of the applications they use. It offers a citizen-centred approach to personal data, providing greater control on how this data is used by various applications.
The first part of the workshop will provide a conceptual overview of Solid and how the project is connected to important policy areas such as digital sovereignty, personal data protection and the Once-Only Principle (OOP). A hands-on session will follow, allowing each participant to set up a small-scale Solid server and to experiment with reading and writing data from and to multiple data pods from within applications.
The event will be guided by Ruben Verborgh, professor of decentralised web technology at Ghent University, one of the drivers of the Solid project.
Materials
The materials used in the workshop are uploaded at think link. During and after the event, these will be updated to contain all relevant documentation.
Participants
Due to the hands-on aspect, the audience to this half-day workshop will be limited to 20 participants, possessing prior development experience with Linked Data technologies. However, we also wish to attract senior policy advisers, in order for them to understand how Solid can contribute to personal data protection and OOP implementation. Therefore, joint submissions consisting of a senior policy adviser teaming with a technical expert from his/her member state are highly encouraged.
Agenda
The workshop will consist of two sessions, covering Solid-related topics.
Morning session (10:00-12:00)
- Tour de table per member states;
- Introduction to SOLID: concept and architecture, by Ruben Verborgh;
- Implementation of SOLID within a public administration, by Goedele Van der Spiegel;
- Discussion on concepts and how SOLID can contribute to the OOP;
Afternoon session (14:00-16:00)
- Introduction to hands-on learning materials;
- Group exercise per member states;
- Feedback and lessons learned;
