The EU has introduced its updated product liability rules to make room for the sector’s advancements, due to the digital age and latest business models that are used. Product safety laws ensure the health and safety of all goods sold within the EU market and that they adhere to the established environmental standards. These liability rules, originally established in 1985, needed to be updated to take into consideration new technologies, circular economy business models, and global supply chains.
The key updates were made to target the advancements in software, AI systems, and product-related digital services. They are beneficial to both consumers and manufacturers, include products used in the EU market but are manufactured outside of the EU and, also, cover products sold via online platforms.
