EUPL default licence for RMLL cross-discipline knowledge

Sharing knowlege

The World Free Software Meeting 2018 (in French RMLL for «Rencontres Mondiales du Logiciel Libre) will be held at the University of Strasbourg (France) from 7 to 12 July 2018.

A prominent partner of the event is the Free Software Foundation Europe  (FSFE).

The key event thematic is that free software is not only « code », but much more than that: free software (where "free" means freedom and not always "gratis") is transversal and cross disciplines. For example, it may cover the elaboration of music, of books, of virtual reality, of legal instruments like licences, of works related to privacy protection, technology governance in a world where things are now able to communicate and many other aspects.

According to the event organisers, the free movement claims for a humanist concept of culture and knowledge: each human being should have the right to use, study, modify and share/distribute these cultural or knowledge resources. Therefore the RMLL encourages stakeholders to go beyond the simple technical aspects of computer software.

RMLL calls for contributions in English, French or German. By default (if no other licence is requested by contributors) contributions will be distributed under the EUPL v1.2, because it is both copyleft, compatible with many other licences and valid in 23 languages. Another point is that the EUPL v1.2 has an extended scope: “the work” in general, making it especially convenient for covering more than technical source code.
