Best Practice 88

Best Practice 88 - Swedish API strategy
Country: Sweden
Policy domain: e-Government
Level of government: National
Process owners: Agency for Digital Government (DIGG)

Short description: DIGG is leading the establishment of a common national digital infrastructure where API management is a priority focus area. Since digital services are largely based on the availability of APIs for consumers and producers, it is of great importance that organisations manage APIs efficiently from a holistic perspective.

Organisations sharing their APIs via Sweden's data portal can activate the API search function for such APIs with documentation and related resources in the interface. The initiative to build a national API catalogue is part of the ongoing work within the framework of the government's digitalisation strategy.

DIGG has the task of promoting the ability of public actors to share data and APIs in a structured way, in particular through Sweden's data portal. DIGG has established national principles for making information available, upon condition that it is documented and described so that it is easy to discover, understand and use by both people and machines, and is searchable on dataportal.se.

Lantmäteriet makes available on dataportal.se 21 APIs for spatial datasets, maps and ortophotos. In addition, there are more than 50 APIs for location data made available mostly by municipalities, and more than 70 for INSPIRE datasets.

Recommendations: Standardisation and Reuse (10); Return on Investment (16); Governance, Partnerships and Capabilities (18)
