In a significant development for the future of smart cities and digital governance, the United Nations has officially approved the "Y-MIM Standard" (Minimal Interoperability Mechanisms). This new standard aims to enhance interoperability across smart city solutions and digital public infrastructures worldwide, enabling smoother integration and communication between different systems. The Y-MIM Standard, developed by the Open & Agile Smart Cities (OASC) network in collaboration with various global stakeholders, is designed to provide a foundation for cities and communities to ensure that their digital systems can work together effectively. By standardising the minimal requirements for interoperability, Y-MIM facilitates the seamless exchange of data, services, and applications across different platforms and jurisdictions.
The OASC, believes that the standard will pave the way for more collaborative and innovative solutions in the smart city sector. The organisation continues to work with its network of over 150 cities worldwide to promote the adoption and implementation of the Y-MIM Standard. With this approval, cities and governments are expected to accelerate the integration of the Y-MIM Standard into their digital infrastructure projects, ensuring that they are not only building smarter cities but also more connected and interoperable ones.
