Six schools have been awarded earlier this month for finding and sharing new ways to use Iconito, French open source software that helps school management and teaching. The awards are given annually by the CAP-TIC, a semi-governmental IT association and the Académie d'Aix-Marseille, both involved in the development of Iconito.

The first price in the category for class/parental relations this year is for a kindergarten in Châteauneuf Val Saint-Donat for using Iconito to record and distribute daily audio reports from the children in the school. In a second category, focussing on purely educational uses of Iconito, the first price was geven to a IT consultant at school board in the Landes region, for developing a module that involves students in forest ecology.

This year, an extra award was given to the City of Limoges, where development of Iconito began in 2004. The jury commends the city for its support for the application suite.

Iconito is built using PHP, an open source web programming language. The portal can be installed on proprietary operating systems, though it is recommended to use GNU/Linux systems. Th software requires the web server Apache and the Mysql relational database management systems.

The software is published using the LGPL.
