The vision and mission of Telemedicine Clinic (TMC) is to provide additional resources and subspecialized expertise to the health care systems within the EU, using state of the art IT solutions. TMC is today active within teleradiology, reporting on radiology cases from hospitals in Sweden, Denmark, UK and Spain, with specialists in diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine from 10 different countries.

Policy Context

TMC are operating within the EU borders applying the EU regulations where these exist. We also adapt to the national legal frameworks of the countries where we are active. Our specialists are all registered and authorized to work as medical specialists in the respective countries.

Description of target users and groups

Public and private health care providers (hospitals, imaging centers etc) in need of added resources. The scarcity of medical resources is very big in most of the european countries. Today we provide teleradiology services to more than 50 hospitals in four European countries, reporting on more than 10,000 patients/month.

Description of the way to implement the initiative

The type of initiative we run needs a stable operative environment since patients cannot wait for a report. This requires a sophisticated operative organization. This type of service on a large scale is not widely spread before, especially on a cross border platform, which has forced us to find partly new solutions, but using state of the art existing IT solutions.

Technology solution

Standard DICOM image transfer technology. Radiology informations system (RIS) especially tailored to meet our needs. Various communication systems.

Technology choice: Standards-based technology

Main results, benefits and impacts

Our initiative has managed to reduced waiting times for MR (Magnetic Resonance) exams in several countries from 40-50 weeks to 8-18 weeks by increasing the reporting capacity, which has been the main limiting factor in many hospitals.

Track record of sharing

We are in constant discussions with national and regional health care authorities in all 4 countries where we are operative and share ideas on improving solutions for the future.

Lessons learnt

It is possible to increase capacity and excellence of care by means of a collaboration between local radiology resources and a remote teleradiology solution, working together. The main obstacles today are to overcome old traditions and to find the most suitable communication tools.
