Spain's new Cl@ve eID system is making it easier to access eGovernment services, the country’s eGovernment portal writes in a new technical report in which it describes Cl@ve as a success. The eID system was introduced on November 19, 2014 and six months later, on 20 May, already had a million registered users.
Cl@ve, offers a common platform for identification, authentication and digital signatures. The software currently supports integration with two existing eID systems, @firma, Spain’s solution for validation of e-certificats and e-signatures, and STORK, the European eID interoperability project.
The platform also offers support for two new mechanisms involving shared keys. Users can enter a PIN code, combined with a temporary password, or use a password that is valid for a longer period in combination with keys sent via SMS.

The platform is also compliant with the European eIDAS regulation. These procedures aim to increase trust in cross-border electronic transactions.
The eID solution currently offers access to some central government services. In the coming months, the new eID system will be implemented in other public administrations, allowing its use by the majority of citizens. The platform is already being integrated by some regional governments.
According to the report, Cl@ve is a “project that highlights a collaborative approach to the provision of common services”. Collaboration is one of the guiding principles of the ICT strategy of the newly formed Department of ICT, which is part of the Ministry of Finances and Public Administration.
Cl@ve is sponsored by Spain’s Ministry of Finance and Public Administration. It also involves the social security agency, the state tax authority and the national police.
