In early January, the Czech online database for public procurement registered its millionth contract: an order for water purification filters by a hospital in the town of Znojmo, the Czech Ministry of the Interior announced.

Since early 2016, public sector organisations and state-owned companies organisations in the Czech Republic have to publish all contracts over 50,000 CZK (about EUR 2,000) in an online database, the Registr Smluv (Register of Contracts) managed by the Ministry of the Interior. The aim to reduce corruption.

From July 2017, contracts that have not been published online, or not published in time, are invalid. In the month preceding that deadline, 84,733 contracts were posted - a record number, the ministry notes in an announcement. In the last quarter, public sector organisations have added some 70,000 contracts per month.

The Registr Smluv records are available as open data, the ministry said, “for analysis by any interested party, for example non-profit organisations”.
