Study reveals next generation internet initiative's impact on EU digital innovation and standards

Next generation internet initiative on EU digital landscape

Published on: 17/09/2024 News

A new study has been released assessing the impact of the Next Generation Internet (NGI) initiative, providing both quantitative and qualitative insights. This comprehensive analysis examines how NGI-funded projects align with EU digital rights, legislation, standardisation efforts, and sustainability goals. The findings reveal that the NGI initiative has significantly influenced the development of a sustainable and sovereign Open-Source tech ecosystem in Europe, reflecting core EU values and policies. Key highlights include:

  • Alignment with EU Legislation: NGI projects support compliance with important regulations such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the Digital Services Act (DSA), the Digital Market Act (DMA), and the Cyber Resilience Act.
  • Focus on Individual Rights and Sustainability: The initiative emphasises individual rights, freedom of choice, safety, security, and sustainability.
  • Advancements in Standardisation: NGI-funded projects have played a role in standardising various protocols and technologies, enhancing privacy, security, interoperability, and overall functionality within the digital sphere.
  • Support for Innovation and Skills Development: With over 1,000 projects and approximately 80,000 active contributors, the NGI initiative supports a thriving community of ICT developers in Europe.
  • Strengthening Open-Source Ecosystems: The initiative has contributed to the growth of the internet’s Free and Open-Source Software (FOSS) community by improving auditability, predictability, and resilience in the open-source software supply chain.
