Europe's Leap into Next-Generation Internet of Things and Edge Computing

EU's Future Internet of Things Vision

Published on: 23/04/2024 News

The European Union is at the forefront of revolutionising the Internet of Things (IoT) and Edge Computing, a move set to significantly change production and process monitoring across key value chains. This strategy integrates IoT with artificial intelligence and big data, leveraging sensor data for real-time actions and insights. Emphasising edge computing, the EU aims to reduce communication and storage costs while enhancing machine learning capabilities.

Key initiatives include the Next Generation Internet of Things (NGIoT) project and substantial funding through Horizon Europe. These efforts are designed to bolster Europe’s digital autonomy by creating a computing continuum from edge devices to the cloud, involving European tech leaders in smart platform development.

Europe's strategy also includes workshops and forums to design a future-oriented IoT and edge computing strategy. The focus is on trusted platforms and orchestration mechanisms, supported by Horizon Europe's investment in R&I, aiming for an efficient and secure computing continuum.
