The "Prémio Abertura" is an award intended to recognize organizations in Portugal and Portuguese-Speaking communities that have been outstanding in their use and adoption of Open Source technologies or that have contributed to its promotion.

The first edition of the Abertura award took place in 2009 and has been running ever since.

In its present form, we seek to acknowledge Portuguese organizations, from all sectors, public and private, and from Portuguese-Speaking communities, which have used, developed or implemented services or products using Open Source technologies (with OSI-approved licenses).
