About Code for Earth:

Code for Earth is an innovation programme run by ECMWF, aimed at driving open-source developments in the Earth sciences community, including weather, atmosphere, and climate. The programme brings together developer teams each summer to work on innovative projects with experienced mentors from ECMWF and partner organisations.

How it Works:

  1. Call for Participation (29 February - 09 April): Browse through the 2024 challenges on GitHub, ask questions, and tailor your submission with ECMWF mentors. Submit your proposal by 09 April 2024.
  2. Announcement of Selected Proposals (29 April): The selected teams will be announced on 29 April 2024. Follow Code for Earth on X and subscribe to the newsletter for updates.
  3. Coding Phase (02 May - 31 August): The four-month coding period begins on 02 May 2024, during which teams will work with mentors who are experts in areas like weather, climate, AI/ML, and open-source software development.
  4. Final Code for Earth Day (18 September): The programme culminates in a celebratory event at ECMWF's headquarters in Reading, UK, where teams will present their project results.
