Interoperable Europe, through the National Interoperability Framework Observatory (NIFO), is pleased to announce the publication of the 2022 edition of its State-of-play report on Digital Public Administration and Interoperability.

What can be found in this report?

This new report provides a run-through of the latest digital initiatives aimed at further digitalising public administrations and ensure their interoperability put in place within 35 European countries, as well as at European and global level, between 2020 and 2022. In addition, the report provides an overview of the current state-of-play of interoperability across Europe, based on the level of implementation of the European Interoperability Framework (EIF) in the same European countries in 2021. This dedicated chapter on interoperability compares countries’ performances in 2020 and 2021 to find correlations and commonalities among them but also potential areas for improvement to help European countries in further advancing the implementation of the EIF.

Our findings

The report shows that European countries continue their path towards an increasingly digitalised public administration, a trend already observed in the last few years and further accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, a clear shift of mindset is observed regarding the use of digital tools by public administrations and the concept of digital public services, with user-centricity, usability and interoperability emerging as key priorities when designing new or existing services. In this context, the European Commission has demonstrated a strong dedication to promote the uptake of digital solutions by its Member States, acting as an innovative driving force for digital transformation and supporting the development of cross-border digital services in the EU.
