eHerkenning is an open federated trust framework for digital identification and representation. Although it is based on open standards, the solution itself is not open source. It has been an officially recognised eIDAS scheme since 2019, allowing European businesses to log in securely to Dutch public services (and vice-versa). 

eHerkenning enables companies and public organisations to register role-based authorisations for their employees, ensuring each person can act only within the scope of their job. It also supports chain authorisation (ketenmachtiging), allowing organisations, especially SMEs, to authorise trusted intermediaries (e.g. accountants, payroll providers, customs brokers) to perform transactions on their behalf. The goal is to reduce administrative burden and to improve the efficiency and security of government and supply-chain processes. 

eHerkenning is operated within the Dutch Trust Framework for Electronic Identification (Afsprakenstelsel Elektronische Toegangsdiensten). Access for organisations is provided through a set of approved brokers, and the framework offers standardised delegation and authorisation models that can be reused across sectors and borders, including in the context of the EUDI Wallet.
