The Nomenclature for Properties and Units (NPU) terminology is an international medical laboratory terminology that is owned and supported by International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC, http://www.ifcc.org/) and International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC, https://iupac.org/).
The NPU terminology is purposed to present and communicate laboratory examination results in health care systems in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Its concepts and principles were established and developed in the scientific communities since the 1960's.
The NPU terminology contains laboratory examination codes within the fields of biochemistry, immunology, genetics, allergology, pharmacology and toxicology, reproduction and fertility, thrombosis and haemostasis, and microbiology.
The international version of the laboratory examination codes is in British English, and translated to Danish and Swedish. The laboratory examination codes can be seen in http://www.ifcc.org/ifcc-scientific-division/sd-committees/c-npu/npusea…
As an important concept of the terminology, measurement units (most SI units) are included in the laboratory examination codes if relevant.
