The Open Technology Research (OTR) Symposium is a global, multidisciplinary research conference that brings together academics and practitioners to advance the understanding of the role of open technologies.

This year’s symposium is framed around the theme “Shaping the Open Transition” to move from diagnosis to action: from mapping the landscape to charting the path forward. Its agenda is organised in six blocks: governance (including a sub-block on governance and AI), open source hardware, sustainability and business models, behavioural change and adoption, open science and research infrastructure and public procurement ecosystem.

The event will include keynotes anchored in what is already working and sessions designed to translate research directly into policy recommendations and practice. It is both a stocktaking exercise and a forward-looking call to build a more united, evidence-based global research agenda - one that strengthens open technology’s role as a shared foundation for resilience and sovereignty, reinforces public interest governance and mobilises research and evidence to drive collective action.

The OTR Symposium is jointly organised by OpenForum Europe (OFE), Open Source Initiative (OSI), Open Knowledge Foundation (OKFN) and Digital Infrastructure Insights Fund (D//F). It is part of the Barcelona Open Tech Week, dedicated to digital rights and democratic innovation brining together civil society, public institutions, academia and communities around free and open source software.
