The government of Slovakia will allow holders of eID smart cards to use the Internet to update records in the country’s civil registration. The new functionality is to be added in the coming months.

The use of smart cards for civil records was announced at a workshop in Bratislava last week, organised by the Ministry of Finance.

During the workshop the ministry also presented the Central Government Portal www.slovensko.sk. This portal aims to be a single access point to services for the public and public authorities. The portal provides common registry, authentication and authorisation services, in addition to services for electronic filing and payments, and will channel the flow of government information.

For citizens and businesses the portal will become the main access point for eGovernment services, the Ministry of Finance writes. The aims to is make the portal channel hundreds of government services. Already 57 per cent of citizens in the Slovak Republic use the Internet to communicate with public administrations in the country.

The Ministry of Finance is organising a series of workshops to introduce new eGovernment services to the country’s central government bodies, local authorities and suppliers of electronic services.
