The European Union is actively working to clarify and streamline its digital legislation. This effort, termed the Digital Omnibus, aims to enhance the coherence of the existing technology regulatory framework. The European Commission is prioritising three key domains: data governance, cybersecurity, and Artificial Intelligence. The primary objective is to ensure that various laws are harmonised, thereby preventing contradictions and reducing redundant reporting requirements for businesses.
To address this issue, officials introduced the Digital Fitness Check, a systematic review to assess whether existing legislation remains suitable for the contemporary digital environment. An integral component of this initiative was a public consultation and a call for evidence, during which individuals and businesses provided insights into the challenges they encounter with complex digital regulations.
The feedback period concluded on 11 March 2026. Specialists are currently reviewing the available evidence to determine which regulations may require revision or elimination. Through these modifications, the European Union aims to foster innovation while ensuring the protection of personal data and fundamental rights.
